Language Club Hosted Macanese Cuisine Cooking Experiencing Workshop
Organized by MMA Language Club and sponsored by Macao Foundation, the “Macanese Cuisine Cooking Experiencing Workshop” was successfully held on June 28. The event had attracted participants from government departments, public services, private enterprises and higher education institutions.
To promote and preserve the unique culture of Macanese Gastronomy, the event specially invited representatives from the Confraria da Gastronomia Macaense, Mr. Carlos Cabral and Ms. Rita Cabral as lecturers, attracting many food enthusiasts to actively participate. The workshop was rich and substantial in content and was divided into two main sessions.
In the first session, the lecturer shared the origins and development of Macanese cuisine. Through in-depth explanations, participants not only learned about the unique historical background of Macanese cuisine, which blends Portuguese and Chinese culinary traditions, but also picked up relevant Portuguese culinary terms, laying a cultural foundation for the subsequent cooking session.
The second session was the highly anticipated hands-on cooking session. The lecturers guided participants step by step, teaching the essential cooking techniques. Under their patient guidance, every participant successfully cooked the traditional Macanese Minchi, experiencing the entire process of bringing this signature dish to life.
Macanese Gastronomy was originated at the 16th century. It is a food culture based on cooking methods from Portuguese cuisine and incorporating ingredients and cooking methods from Africa, India, Southeast Asia, and the local Chinese population. Combining the merits of each cuisine, this food culture then developed on its own in an independent and unique manner, becoming a rich and diverse array of dishes that embody Macao’s unique gastronomic culture. In 2012, Macanese Gastronomy was inscribed on theList of Macao’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, recognized as a symbol of cultural exchange between China and Portugal and its role as a cultural carrier of a unique culinary tradition found nowhere else in the world.
The Language Club is a special interest group of MMA aiming to provide practical learning opportunities and various activities to encourage participants to engage in foreign language communications and improve their language expression skills.
